The Engagement

J.D. came home with me over Christmas break to ask my parents' permission to marry me. I was well aware of J.D.'s intentions and so I was pretty much expecting a proposal after we started school again in January. Week after week passed and nothing happened... so I just assumed that J.D. would take his own sweet time. One weekend, J.D. and I planned to take a trip to Nevada with one of his roommates and his girlfriend. Before the trip, we were going to drive up to Layton to visit his family for a little bit. On our way down to Layton, J.D.'s Dad called and suggested that we meet his parents in Ogden to try some new icecream and visit a new shopping center. I thought that was a little random but didn't suspect anything. When we got to Ogden, J.D. pulled into the parking lot of a place called iFly Utah, an indoor skydiving center! I was so surprised and excited. It was supposed to be an early Valentine's Day gift, because we wouldn't be able to do anything the next day. J.D., his Dad, and I all got trained to skydive and suited up in our gear. There were two ladies and a dad and his son who were flying at the same time as us. We let all those folks go first and then we each had a turn. Basically, we jumped into this big wind tunnel that has really high speed fans that blow air and keep you up. There was an instructor who helped us. The first turn basically just allowed us to get used to what it was like and then we each had a 60 second turn to go again. Everyone went and Iwas last. When I jumped into the wind tunnel, the instructor held me in one spot and I got a little frustrated. I was irritated that I wasn't flying high like everyone else had. After about 20 seconds, the instructor spun me around the opposite direction. J.D.'s mom and another guy were holding a 3 ft by 8 ft banner behind the glass that read, "Summer, Will you marry me?" I was so surprised! During training, I had been taught not to open my mouth because the intensity of the wind would pull spit across my face. Well, I forgot to keep my mouth closed and got a nice slimey face. Then, the instructor turned me the other way and J.D. was kneeling in the doorway. He couldn't bring the ring in because of the wind shaft, so he didn't have anything to hold. He just kindof put his hands out and shrugged his shoulders. I was still flying, so I gave him a two thumbs up. The instructor pulled me over to the doorway where I kissed and hugged my new fiance while I was still flying! J.D. gave me the ring after my flight. It was so perfect!
